Behavior

Initial Evaluation
Before creating a custom-tailored training program for you and your "Fellow K9," we take the time to understand what makes your K9 unique. We carefully evaluate temperament, behavioral traits, responses to stress, current training and challenges, handler concerns, and your long-term goals. This comprehensive evaluation allows us to develop a personalized plan of action specifically suited to you and your K9.
Behavioral Correction
An in-depth analysis of behavioral traits followed by a structured plan designed to address the root cause of unwanted behaviors, not simply mask the symptoms. We help handlers understand why behaviors occur and how to properly address them, creating more appropriate, reliable responses and lasting results rather than relying on temporary “band-aid” solutions. “Understanding and taking ownership of how handler interactions can shape behavior is a critical part of regaining control and creating lasting change.”
Obedience Training
From foundational commands to advanced obedience, we build reliability, focus, discipline, and clear communication between handler and K9. As training progresses, we work toward self-discipline, where your K9 learns to maintain control, focus, and obedience even without constant direction. We go over the 3 Principles Of Respect and the Command Formula, the foundational elements that K9 Strategies teaches. “A trained K9 is a happy K9! Obedience plays a quintessential role in helping them understand what is expected of them while creating a clearer and more enjoyable relationship between you.”
Walk Training (Handler Oriented)
We help you establish two distinct styles of walking: a structured walk and a free-time/greet break. Training is broken into clear portions, teaching your "Fellow K9" when each behavior is appropriate. We also work through distractions using commands such as Heel, Switch, Inside, and Leave It, along with other practical strategies to make walks more controlled, fluid, and enjoyable. Intermediate and Advanced classes are available. "Our training develops the skills and confidence needed to walk your K9 calmly and reliably through real-world distractions.”
Walk With A "Strategy"
Unlike traditional walking services that simply provide exercise or help pass the time while you are away, Walk With A "Strategy" combines a purposeful walk with focused, real-world training. Every walk is built around two priorities: giving your "Fellow K9" meaningful exercise while also working directly on the concerns you experience during walks, including leash manners, pulling, distractions, overexcitement, reactivity, or other goals you want addressed. Rather than returning your K9 from just another walk, we use the walk itself as the training environment to reinforce better choices, clearer structure, and more reliable behavior where it actually matters. "It is not just a walk. It is a walk with purpose, structure, and a Strategy."
Off-Leash Training
We teach you how to properly manage off-leash freedom, remain situationally aware, and understand your responsibilities as a handler. Training focuses on reliable recall, appropriate rewards and corrections, and teaching your "Fellow K9" that freedom is earned and can be maintained through good choices. “Our goal is to equip you with the necessary skills and confidence to maintain reliable control of your K9 while off-leash.”
E-Collar Training
We teach you how to use an E-Collar as a supplemental tool, not as a substitute for proper training or handler leadership. Proper conditioning, timing, levels, and application are taught, including when the E-Collar is appropriate and when it is not. Our goal is to develop a responsive K9 that understands the handler’s communication without relying predominantly on the collar. "Good handling always starts with the handler, not the tools employed."
Handler Communication
The common denominator between a trained and untrained K9 will always be the handler. We teach you how to build a solid relationship with your "Fellow K9." You will learn how to communicate clearly, read behavior and body language, use proper timing and reinforcement, and confidently navigate the challenges of handling a K9. "We train the handler first because a trained K9 is only as reliable as the handler behind them."
Service K9 Training
We provide individualized Service K9 training based on your needs, whether for a qualifying condition, public access, or travel. We teach you how to responsibly train and handle your Service K9, with an emphasis on proper behavior, control, and public etiquette. Wearing the Service K9 badge is a privilege, we teach you to represent it with responsibility and respect for the community. "We help prepare your Service K9 for travel and vouch for the training provided when requested."
Protection Training
A true Protection K9 is developed through proper stages of training first. This includes confidence development, obedience, control, environmental exposure, and clear handler communication. Going straight into protection work without first establishing these foundational skills is one of the most common mistakes handlers make. We help you build a solid foundation prior to introducing protection work. "The goal to strive for is controlled protection not a loose cannon."
In Home Board & Train
K9 Strategies proudly offers a more personal approach to Board & Train. We do not believe in a high-volume kennel-style program where every K9 competes for limited individual time and attention. To protect the quality of training, we intentionally limit intake so your "Fellow K9" can receive focused, one-on-one attention. Your K9 stays in our personal home, becomes part of our daily environment, and lives alongside our trained K9 pack. As a result, your K9 will train in a true real-world environment rather than a simulated kennel setting, helping yield the best possible results. "Providing a unique Board & Train experience designed to give your K9 the greatest opportunity for lasting success."
